Born in 1952 in Bolzano (Italy), where he lives and works (amongst other occupations as an architectural photographer for public administration), Walter Niedermayr belongs to the most uncompromising personalities in contemporary Italian photography. Trained in electrical engineering, computer science and technical drawing, he took up filming and since 1970 photography. Prolonged trips abroad in connection with his work (most recently New York and Japan). Since 1988 individual and group exhibitions at home and abroad (USA, Germany, Austria, France, England, Spain). The large black and white and colour photographs of his series Die bleichen Berge (The pale mountains), taken in 1992 in the Dolomites, were presented in the following year by AR/GE Kunstgalerie Museum Bolzano. The book bearing the same title and with excellent texts by Wolfgang Fetz and Carl Aigner is of the highest quality and pleases the eye as much as the intellect. In 1994 the exhibition went to Graz (Austria) and Cahors (France). In the same year his work was presented in the Museum für Gestaltung in Zurich, and in 1995 he received the European Photography Award. In 1998 he shot another series of compositions of urbanised alpine landscapes: Reservate des Augenblicks (Momentary Resorts). Exhibitions in Bolzano, Bilbao, New York, Paris, followed by the publication of another exquisite book with texts by S. Hauser, F. Bonami and G. Tortosa.
The pictures of these two series reflect the alpine landscape with subtle abstraction. Niedermayr observes from a physical and emotional distance and with a keen analytical eye the shifting aspects of the alpine world. Never destructive, he poses questions and queries, often with a fine touch of irony. His work represents contemplative essays on the phenomenon of mass tourism in the Alps and the inexorable despoliation caused by the human species.
